FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Do I need a license to export?

Yes. If you are going to export regularly a license can be applied for from the Department of Agriculture and Water Resources. We are happy to guide you through the process.

If I am going to export regularly, am I able to export through an agent?

Stockair is able to recommend reliable agents if required.

Do I need an import permit?

Yes. You will need both an Import Permit and the appropriate Health Conditions for that country. These documents outline the specific protocol livestock need to meet to enter the country. We are happy to guide you through the process.

How long does it take from when I select my animals to when I can export them?

This is highly variable dependent on the requirements of the importing country. However, 4-6 weeks would be the minimum. This time frame takes into consideration the time required to carry out all veterinary and isolation procedures and approvals as required by the importing country and can also be used to meet the exporting and importing criteria for documentation and compliance. Stockair can assist you with all aspects of this process depending on the services you require.

How long does it take for vet checking?

This depends on the requirements of the importing country. It could take as little as 7 days or as much as 30 days. Stockair regularly works with Australian government accredited veterinarians (AAV) and can assist in the management of veterinary services for export purposes as required.

Can I supply my own 'air crates'?

The risk of escape, injury or death by using non-compliant 'air-crates' is too great.

Stockair supplies IATA compliant livestock crates specifically designed to suit your livestock and their journey. We take into consideration details such as livestock’s weight, height, sex, breed characteristics and behaviours and ventilation requirements when planning your crate requirements.

Safety of your animals is paramount to Stockair, hence we pride ourselves on providing strong, robust crates suited to the client’s livestock type and ensuring the crates are of superior quality to the benefit of your animals.

Additionally, your crates will be stored correctly at the airport, delivered on time, ready for use when your livestock arrive and are ready to be loaded.

Are the 'air crates' able to be reused?

The timber 'air-crates' are built as 1 way only and cannot be returned to Australia.

It is the importer’s responsibility to remove the 'air-crates' from the airport once unloaded and have them either destroyed or recycled. In many countries, this timber is recycled to the benefit of the local communities.

Where are animals placed on an aircraft?

Animals can be transported in their crates by air via:

  1. Full charter
Where a freighter aircraft’s cargo is entirely dedicated to livestock for a specific consignment/ location
  2. Part Charter
Part of a scheduled freighter service where livestock travel in their crates alongside general cargo
  3. Lower cargo hold of a passenger aircraft.
Note: This combination is only suitable for specific aircraft.

What type of Freighter aircraft are used to carry livestock?

Stockair works with a range of airlines to source the most suitable aircraft for their client’s needs. We take into consideration the destination required, livestock details and number of heads to source the most suitable aircraft. The most common freighter aircraft include Airbus A330, Boeing 747, Boeing 777 and Boeing 737.
